How To Discover God’s Plan For Your Life
“What am I doing with my life?” is a major concern of many individuals that I know. We are clumsily navigating careers, relationships and friendships and praying that we make the right moves. Most people do not have life figured out by age 25, or even 45, but as long as we have breath in our lungs, God has both a plan and a purpose for each and every person on earth. Reading Gods word is key to discovering your purpose. Here are some scripture-based tips on how to discover God’s plan for your life.
-
Spend time with God
A foundational aspect of knowing Gods plan for your life is spending time in His presence. This can be done with prayer, worship, reading the word and having and fellowship with other believers. Matthew 6:33 states “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” A lot of times, people are prone to go to God only when we want or need something, but it is crucial that we seek the Giver before seeking any of his gifts. -
Pay attention to your story
God is an author inviting you to play a role in His great story. Psalm 139:16 states “Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.” Take a second to let that sink in. God has written every single day of your life into his story. It makes sense, then, that clues about your calling can be found within the story of your life. I once heard a pastor say that the best way to find meaning in life is to go back to a mountain you overcame and help someone else climb over it. For example, a person who experienced physical abuse may choose a vocation that allows them to help other victims. Think about the things that have challenged you or helped in your own life while trying to decipher your calling. -
Don’t be afraid to move.
Christians can be extremely anxious when it comes to making big decisions, because we want to know that every move we are making is in step with Gods plan and purpose. Sometimes, that turns into Christians choosing to stand still and do nothing. Jeremiah 29:11 says “’For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the LORD, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’” It is important to remember that our lives are in the hands of God, and therefore we do not need to overthink every choice and decision we make. It is God’s plan, so as long as we are living for him the details are in God’s hands. For example, a student may be debating which school to attend between two colleges, and it may seem like the biggest decision in the world at the time, but God is present at both. Make a move towards your goals, and trust that God will meet you there.
