Discovering Your Purpose in Life
Everything that God created, He created for a purpose, which represents a divine assignment. Purpose also is divinely connected to a placement, that is, as there is a purpose for everything, there is also a place to accommodate the purpose, and help bring it to fruition. Every seed produces after its own kind, and the crucible where germination takes place, is the ground. “Verily, verily, I say unto you, except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abides alone: but if it dies, it brings forth much fruit” (John 12:24). The major purpose for which we are created by God is for the declaration of His praise and the primary assignment given to man by God, is to praise Him, for that is the only thing He cannot do for Himself. To this end, we understand that our lives are expected to attract praise to God, and also, we are expected to praise Him.
Praising God is not what should be done only when it is convenient. It is a requirement for as long as we have our breath in us, let everything that has breath praise the Lord. Take the case of a potter and the pot as an example. The potter designs his pots with a goal and a purpose to achieve in mind and that informs the sizes into which the pots are made. The same is the case with God. God as we understand, made all things good to His glory. Some He created white, some He created black, and others He created brown, but with the same color of blood running through them all. What means good to God may mean otherwise to man, for His thoughts are our thoughts, and neither are His ways our ways. God does not tempt with evil but does allow a semblance of evil noticeable in the lives of His creatures all to the extent of achieving His goal and purpose of creation.
Say to the righteous, it shall be well with him, and to the wicked, it shall not be well with him. In the eyes of God, it does not have to be well with your circumstances, for it to be well with your soul. Just as the pot has no right or authority to question how it has been made by the potter, and for what intent and purpose, the same is the case with man, who lacks the spiritual and moral authority to question the works of God, in relation to his makeup and deficiencies. The purpose of everything is superior to anything that has been made for by the word of God, for by faith we know that things that appear were made from things that do not appear. In other words, what we see is temporal while what we do not see is eternal. To appreciate purpose and its accompanying assignments, the place of vision is crucial and critical. “Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keeps the law, happy is he” (Proverbs 29:18). Not having access to a vision does not mean it is not there. The reasons can be adduced to the fact that the vision is not plain or clear enough to be comprehended, thereby making it difficult for man to see well. The vision about your life and mine are clearly written in the word of life which represents God’s manual, but the hindrances could be the veil covering our faces which can only be dislodged by the help of the Holy Spirit, which is the author of the book of life called The Bible (2 Corinthians 3:18).
How do I understand my purpose in life?
- Be born again: The bible says, except a man be born again, he cannot see, let alone access the kingdom of God (John 3:3). In the kingdom, as far as you can see, so will you be able to possess (Genesis 13:14). Seeing well, makes the pursuit and the realization of purpose faster on the earth (Jeremiah 1:11).
- Engage the Spirit of God in your search of the truth from the scriptures, because the word of God came into being by the inspiration of God moving men to speak out the words as inspired by the Holy Spirit of God. “For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Ghost” (2 Peter 1:21). No one understands a book better than its author. The Holy Spirit of God is the author of the word of God, and only He searches all things, including the deep things of God (1 Corinthians 2:10).
How do I pursue my purpose in life to a logical conclusion?
- Submit yourself absolutely to the leadership of God by letting Him be the Shepherd of your life. “The meek will He guide in judgment: and the meek will He teach His way” (Psalm 25:9). Divine guidance is indispensable in the pursuit of your purpose in life, for there is a way that seems right unto a man but the end thereof is the way of death. Purpose cannot be pursued on guess work, for seeming right does not make it right (Proverbs 14:12, 16:25).
- Be not offended in God: Getting offended in God is the greatest risk that any man can take, for it is only when God is for us that we can be insulated against the incautions of the enemy. Jesus said “And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me” (Matthew 11:6). Getting offended in God is what makes man complain, murmur, grumble, and speak negative words against himself and God. This makes God to turn his back at man and when that happens, man can never find his front or go forward in life.
- Give God the first place in your life: We are admonished to seek the kingdom of God and His righteousness first, and all other things shall be added unto us. Exploit in life is not a function of our abilities, but by His grace, for except the Lord builds the house, they labor in vain that build it, and except the Lord watches over the city, the watchmen are awake but in vain. Make it a guiding principle of your life, that whatever God cannot give you, may you not get it, and wherever God cannot take you, may you not get there. This is because not all open doors are from God, many are traps in disguise. When God leads, the followers don’t get thirsty or hungry. “And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of His grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified” (Acts 20:32). As you seek God and the interest of His kingdom first, may all your hanging inheritances drop on your laps for a possession, in Jesus name.
- Be focused: Fix your gaze on God alone, for from Him comes your help. Promotion comes not from anywhere or anyone, but from God. Those who look at God and not man, do not get ashamed. They looked unto Him and were radiant, and their faces were not ashamed (Psalm 34:5, 121:1-2).
- Make God the real purpose to pursue after: God made you for Himself and not you for yourself (Psalm 100:3). “This people have I formed for Myself, they shall declare My praise” (Isaiah 43:21). “Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honor and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created” (Revelation 4:11).
In conclusion, be admonished that searching for anything in life from any take-off point to Christ is taking off from the wrong point. The pursuit of your goal in life must be from Christ to the goal, for by strength no man shall prevail, and those who do know their God shall be strong and do great exploits (1 Samuel 2:9, Daniel 11:32). It does not matter what your disability is or what is in your life as a lack, take solace in the realization that God has the power to turn your situations around. Realize also, that it is only at the discretion of God to turn your situation around according to your expectations, or to use you the way you are for His glory. You are like a pot in the hands of the potter. May your colorful destiny not be shattered. Until you discover, you cannot recover. Receive the grace to discover and recover your purpose in life, in Jesus name.
