Governor Seyi Makinde Shelves Celebration for Ibadan Stampede Victims

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has cancelled his birthday celebration in honour of the 35 children who lost their lives in a tragic stampede during a children’s funfair in Ibadan. The governor makes this announcement while receiving a delegation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), led by Senator Adolphus Wabara, the party’s Board of Trustees Chairman.

He describes the incident as “painful, unfortunate, and preventable” and expresses his decision to spend his birthday, December 25th, indoors instead of celebrating. He says, “It is a day that is really sobering for me personally. Not only did I cancel the event in Ebonyi, I told everyone that I would stay indoors on my birthday. There is no party; I have sent the message out.”

He also acknowledges the challenges faced in the State, including the Bodija explosion earlier in the year 2024.

The governor further thanks the delegation for their support and condolences. The PDP delegation includes notable figures such as Dr. Sam Egwu, former Governor of Ebonyi State; Senator Ben Obi, former National Secretary of the PDP; and Chief Ali Odefa, PDP National Vice Chairman (South-East), among others.
